Synergy arrives at the Scruffy Technology Centre!

It was with much excitement that we took delivery of the Aquila Synergy prototype that we will be racing in the OSS this season. The car is the first ever Synergy built and has been the testing mule at the factory in Denmark so it has already seen some action! Despite the fact that it’s already been used there is still some work to be done to get it into racing trim as some of the kit that is required by the racing regs doesn’t need to be fitted to the car for testing and some of the parts currently fitted are early ‘evaluation’ parts that have been superseded.

So we have our work cut out to ready the car by Easter weekend for the Synergy’s competition debut at Silverstone. We are going to be assisted by a couple of our friends from BCU who are coming down this weekend to run through some bits with us, they are far more familiar with the car than we are having been massively involved with the project from the start.

There will be three Synergy’s running in the opening race, our aim on this first outing will be to bring all three home! We can worry about racing later on in the season!

Swinging Sixties test day

It was a cold, wet day at Snetterton on Thursday! Kym wanted to give the Midget a pre season shakedown to run the new gearbox through its paces and generally put some miles on both car and driver before the racing gets underway.

In the morning the rain was very heavy and with lots of standing water on the circuit Kym made the (wise) decision to wait until the weather improved as it was predicted to do by 11ish, working on the basis that we weren’t going to learn a great deal tiptoeing round on a very wet slippery track.

In fact it was just after lunch when conditions had improved sufficiently to make it worth venturing out onto the circuit. Kym made the most of the drying line and put the little car through its paces, putting in some consistent laps and finding time throughout the afternoon sessions, no problems or mechanical issues during the afternoon made it a good day in the end.

We are looking forward to the first CSCC race back at Snetterton in a couple of weeks time.

Aquila Synergy news

We are pleased to announce that we will be campaigning the new Aquila Synergy during 2015 in the BRSCC OSS Championship. We will be racing the factory’s original prototype alongside the Birmingham City University built car in Class E of the popular series for sports prototype cars. While the Synergy will be outgunned by the rest of the OSS field we will be competing for class honours and expect the class, which is specifically designed for the Synergy, to attract further entries for next season with the ultimate goal of a stand alone race alongside the OSS for the cars in the future.

While we will be competing on track against the BCU racing team we are planning to work closely alongside them both at the circuits and between races as their involvement in the design of the car and willing team of students will be invaluable to us, particularly at the start of the season.

The OSS race meetings feature a triple header of three rounds of the championship per weekend in which our car will be piloted variously by Matt Domin, Paul Watson and joining the team for his racing debut, Aquila’s head of Marketing Paul Hill (once he has passed his ARDS test!) you can see the OSS calendar on our calendar page.

1968 MGC-GT Sebring Replica ‘The Grey Whale’

CSCC ‘Swinging Sixties’ race car

£34,500

Built by Julius Thurgood in 1982. The car was well known in MGCC circles having raced with several owners continuously from ’86 to 2002 and then used sparingly on the road and for track days until it was purchased by the current owner in 2008.

The car was then completely stripped and rebuilt over the next 2 years, with Sebring bodywork as a ‘sister car’ to the well known MGC Sebring rep of Mike McBride. The shell was stripped bare and any damage or corrosion removed, it was then built up with Sebring panels, including a ‘works’ front valance which we have specially made with a larger grill to assist cooling to the specially enlarged radiator. Having never been raced this ‘box fresh’ race car is ready to compete in the CSCC Swinging Sixties or the MGCC BCV8 series to name but two. It will come serviced, set up and ready for the new season.

The rebuilt engine runs triple Webers a big valve head, steel crank, a bespoke alloy sump and JE forged pistons and is expected to dyno at circa 220bhp, the car will be run and set up in a rolling road prior to the new owner taking possession. The suspension has been rose jointed and incorporates adjustable front dampers (height adjustment is via the torsion beams) while the original rear suspension has been replaced with a five link set up incorporating coil over units that are adjustable for both ride height and damping, the original suspension components will accompany the car and can swapped back easily should series regulations require. The wiring was replaced with a bespoke loom which also moved all the fuses and relays onto a readily accessible panel in the car.

The rear axle incorporates a Quiafe LSD unit. An uprated 4 speed gear box is fitted with straight cut gear set. The foam filled alloy fuel tank is accessed via a panel in the boot area and holds sufficient fuel for approximately an hours running.  All the belts, extinguisher etc are tested and in date where required. A brand new Ridgard seat was fitted and is acceptable for all UK/MSA sanctioned events.

We’d be delighted to discuss preparing and running the car for the new owner.
